How to choose a plastic surgeon in Brisbane

Facial skin cancer care with a reconstructive focus
Recovery after gynaecomastia surgery is usually manageable, but it is important to give your chest time to heal properly. In the first few days, you can usually move around gently and go for light walks. Heavy lifting, gym training and strenuous exercise need to be avoided for around 4 weeks, as this can increase swelling and the risk of bleeding in the chest.

After male breast reduction
If you are having gynaecomastia surgery in Brisbane or the Gold Coast, I will talk you through your recovery plan before your procedure, so you know what to expect when you go home. You will also be given clear instructions about your dressings, compression vest, medication, showering and follow-up appointments.
Most men find the recovery much easier when they plan ahead. It can help to arrange a quiet few days at home, organise someone to drive you after surgery, and avoid booking work, travel or gym commitments too soon after your procedure.
Postoperative swelling and bruising after gynaecomastia
In the first week after gynaecomastia surgery, your chest will be healing and settling. When you wake up, your chest will be supported with dressings and a firm compression vest. This helps support the treated area and manage early swelling.
Your chest may look flatter straight away, but it is also normal for swelling to build over the next few days. The area can feel tight, firm, swollen or bruised. Bruising may move down the chest, especially if liposuction has been used as part of your male breast reduction surgery.
You can usually move around gently and go for light walks in the first few days. This is encouraged, but it is important not to do too much too soon. You should avoid lifting, pushing, pulling, gym training, chest exercises and strenuous activity during this time.
The compression vest is an important part of recovery. Most patients wear it strictly for the first 2 weeks. This usually means wearing it day and night, except when showering or when you have been told to remove it. I will explain how to wear it and how to manage your dressings before you go home.
For patients having gynaecomastia surgery in Brisbane or on the Gold Coast, we will also talk through your follow-up plan before surgery, so you know when you will be reviewed and who to contact if you have concerns.
Return to desk-based work
By around day 7, most men feel more comfortable. Pain and tightness usually begin to settle, although swelling, bruising and firmness can still be present. This is normal, and it does not mean the final result is visible yet.
Many patients can return to desk-based work around this time. If your work involves lifting, physical labour, driving for long periods, or repetitive upper body movement, you may need more time away or modified duties.
You can keep walking lightly, but you should still avoid gym training, heavy lifting and upper body exercise. Even if you feel well, the chest is still healing underneath. Doing too much too soon can increase swelling and may increase the risk of bleeding.
At this stage, you will usually still be wearing your compression vest during the day and night. The vest helps support the chest while the tissues begin to settle. I will let you know if any changes need to be made based on how you are healing.
Your follow-up appointment also gives us a chance to check your dressings, review your comfort, and answer practical questions about showering, work, driving and activity.
Slowly return to normal activity
By week 4, many men feel much more like themselves. Swelling and bruising have usually improved, and the chest often feels more comfortable in everyday movement. Some firmness, tightness or mild swelling can still be present, especially around the nipple area or where liposuction was performed.
This is also the stage when the compression vest routine often changes. For many patients, the vest is worn strictly for the first 2 weeks, then at night for another 2 weeks. By week 4, you may be able to stop wearing it, but I will confirm this based on your surgery and how your chest is healing.
Heavy exercise, gym training and lifting can usually be considered around this time, but it should be gradual. Chest exercises, contact sport and heavier upper body training should only restart once you have been cleared to do so.
Your result will not be fully settled at 4 weeks. The chest can continue to soften and refine over the following weeks and months. Your healing, skin quality, swelling, tissue type and the amount of gland or fat removed can all influence how the final contour settles.
For Brisbane and Gold Coast gynaecomastia patients, I will guide you through this stage carefully, including when you can return to work, exercise and your usual routine.
Working is usually fine after 1 week, especially for desk-based or light duties. If your work is physically demanding, we will discuss a safer return-to-work plan during your consultation.
Bathing and showering are usually fine after 36 hours, depending on your dressings and your individual instructions after surgery.
Driving is usually fine after 48 hours, as long as you feel comfortable, are not affected by strong pain medication, and can move safely.
You can usually do light exercise, such as walking, after 1 week. Heavy exercise, gym training, chest exercises and lifting should be avoided for around 4 weeks.
Pain relief and antibiotics are prescribed after surgery. Many men describe the feeling as tightness, pressure or bruising rather than sharp pain. You will be given instructions on how to take your medication safely.

Frequently asked questions about recovery after gynaecomastia surgery
Recovery after gynaecomastia surgery is usually manageable, but your chest still needs time and care to heal well. In the first few days, gentle walking is encouraged. Heavy lifting, gym training and strenuous exercise should be avoided for around 4 weeks, as doing too much too soon can increase swelling and the risk of bleeding in the chest.
Gynaecomastia is enlargement of the male breast area. It may involve glandular tissue, fatty tissue, or both, and it can affect one or both sides of the chest.
You can read more about causes, symptoms and suitability for surgery on the main gynaecomastia page.
You may notice a change in your chest shape early, but swelling can take time to settle. The chest often continues to soften and refine over the following weeks.
Final results are not immediate. Your healing, skin quality, tissue type and swelling all affect how your chest settles.
Avoid heavy lifting, gym training, chest workouts, swimming, smoking and strenuous activity until you have been cleared to return. These steps help reduce the risk of swelling, bleeding and delayed healing.
Dr Andrew Hadj provides gynaecomastia surgery and follow-up care for patients from Brisbane, the Gold Coast and surrounding areas. Your recovery plan will be tailored to your procedure, your work, your lifestyle and your individual healing.
Gynaecomastia surgery is usually performed under general anaesthetic, so you will be asleep during the procedure. The operation may involve removing firm glandular tissue from behind the nipple, using liposuction to reduce fatty tissue around the chest, or a combination of both.
Small incisions are placed as discreetly as possible, and the chest is supported with dressings and compression afterwards. The exact technique depends on your chest shape, skin quality and the type of tissue being treated.
You can read more about this on the gynaecomastia procedure page.
